I have two netmail areas.  The main one is JAM & the other is MSG for makenl,
they're setup like this:

netmailarea NETMAIL /home/ubuntu/fido/msgbase/netmail -b jam 
netmailarea MAKENL  /home/ubuntu/fido/makenl/msgs     -b msg

When makenl compiles a new nodelist that needs to be sent off it'll create a new
msg which becomes: /home/ubuntu/fido/makenl/msgs/1.MSG

Once I run "hpt pack" it's sent off.
