Your writing about canals in France had me thinking of when I worked at Lock
and Dam 43 Ohio River
The older employees there told me that the idea to do that in the USA came from
what the French did to control their waterways for nsvigation.
The Dam at Lock 43 was a Wicket Dam.
Wickets were made of Foot square timbers (4 of them) held together by metal
plates at the Top, Bottom and in the Middle.
The Middle was a framework that had one end attached to the wicket with the
other end fastened at the borrom of the river. Also iat the Middle was a long
metal pole that 'propped' the wicket in place when it landed in a notch when
being raised.

French names for all of the parts of the Dam were used where I worked.
Chnoine, Boule, Weir and possibly the word Wicket also.

Lock and Dam 43 has been removed and replaced by a concrete Dam with Tainer
Gates which are raised/lowered by wire cable attached fo electric motors
mounted at the top of the Dam Piers.

Enjoy your Ocean trip and River trip.
