Hi August

RM> It's definitely a Windows problem, although I suspect at
RM> some point hardware will get so old that even Linux won't
RM> run much on it.

AA>I think the best approach with linux is to find the distro that
  >is the best compatible with the host pc.

Unless you have a common model it might be hard finding others
who have found a best version for it.

AA>So.. experiment with different LIVE-CD distros and their
  >different desktop flavours: Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc.. whatever.

That might be worth a try. I was sort of hoping I might be able
to find a distro that would run in a Window in Windows 7 to save
having to reboot a CD or dual boot the machine to get it running,
something like DosBox but running Linux.. But the computer is just
a Dual Core Compaq with 4 gig ram, AMD 1.3 Ghz with Radeon Graphics.
Not all that high end even when it was new

For the moment all I really need is something that can run a
new enough Browser that will work on the fussy sites. I recently
had to go to the Hydro site where you can apply for the rebates
and it totally refused to even try to load on my Laptop browser.
It was lots of fun trying to fill these things out and do
electronic signatures on my small profile cell phone..

As I mentioned, I am running Opera, which uses the same base
as Chrome 109 from October 2023, the final Windows 7 version.

AA>So.. I decided to settle with Manjaro.

I copied your comments and maybe they will come in handy if I
get into this later. It wouldn't be that difficult to set up
a switch so that I could fairly easily switch from this machine
to my newer Win 10/11 in seconds, and if the problem were in
more places I'd likely do that and mainly just use the Win7
machine for games and some other utilities installed on it.

RM> I still have a Tower on the desk with a suped up version
RM> of Windows 98 on it that I finally stopped using maybe 3
RM> years ago. I do tend to stick with things until the last
RM> dog is hung.. B)

AA>Suped up Win98. Sounds retro-awesome. :D

Something over 100 meg of ram and as well as running the final
updates to everything Win 98, a lot of the built in utilities
were changed over to the stable Win ME versions and a much newer
version of my favourite Opera Browser (2010 version if I recall)
so it was about as up to date as the OS could manage.. B)

Originally I had an ultra high end video card in it but in
later years I had to replace the Motherboard and I ended up
just using the onboard graphics processor which worked well
enough for the things I was running on it.
